Most teachings and theories can be adopted and then applied in practice in an old-fashioned way – learning by the book. SEO techniques, however, do not belong to this category, due to the ever changing nature of search engine algorithms and different nature of the websites that are performing SEO. This means that SEO, no matter how complex it may seem, is above all a practical discipline, and there is no way to tell whether some SEO strategy works or not until you try it out by yourself.
These days everyone will try to sell you some magic trick that will boost your rank and SERP position to heaven. The truth is, there are no big secrets in SEO, at least not the magic ones that the ‘gurus’ will try to sell you. For example, there is a guy who believed he has gotten a certain page rank because he had put Google’s search box on his website, which somehow earned him a special treatment from Google itself. Him having an excellent site with tons of quality back-links, was his secondary concern. He believed that there absolutely had to be some trick to it. And he was very persuasive at expressing this belief of his and even intended to write an e-book about working SEO techniques.
Which brings us to the next problem – whom can you trust?
Internet is a great source of information, but everyone and their dog is a SEO guru nowadays, and there is no way to tell whether some cool sounding information which you found on the Internet, can be trusted or not.
Sure, most of the strategies that do work can also be found on the web, but if you are a beginner it will be difficult for you to tell the sheep from the goats, as too many things over there are simply misleading or purely wrong.
In the best case scenario, if you apply the wrong strategy, you will only lose your time. In the worst case scenario, you may lose the hard-earned page ranking or even get de-indexed by search engines.
Unfortunately, SEO is a long process, and there is no way to see immediate results. That is a reason why applying wrong strategies is something you cannot afford.
The key is to not only learn from your own practices but from the practices of others as well. Get involved with the Internet Marketing communities and forums, where you can hear about how different strategies work for different people. If you keep a healthy dose of skepticism, there is a lot you can learn, apply and harvest excellent results.
